Highty Tighty '67

Highty-Tighty alumni and friends,

It is with great sadness and a profound sense of shock that I must inform you of the passing of Charles Cornelison on Friday October 23, here on the Tech campus.Charlie had come here from Florida to participate in Highty-Tighty Homecoming. He had watched the review on the Drillfield and had walked up to Mike’s at the end of the Mall to have dinner. He passed out. An ambulance arrived and took him to the hospital, but all attempts to revive him failed. I announced his passing to the Highty-Tighties and the alumni at band practice that night.

He was our first president for the HTA, and he served in that position for 27 years. He was given the well-deserved honor of President Emeritus as he stepped down.

He remained active right up to this weekend. Charlie also served two terms as the chairman of the Virginia Tech Corp of Cadets Alumni, and was given the status of Chairman Emeritus. He was instrumental in the formation of that organization.

As a cadet, Charlie was a member of the Highty-Tighty Class of 1967, and he served as Band Company Commander his senior year. General Fullhart told me tonight that Charlie had come into his office this morning. After having some health issues over the past few years, Charlie looked great this morning. General Fullhart told him that he should share with us what he had been doing for his health, because we all needed to do it. Charlie said he had been eating right, exercising, and paying attention to his health issues. He told General Fullhart that he was feeling good.

Saturday, just prior to the picnic, the HTA Board of Directors held a brief meeting and voted to designate Charlie as a Distinguished Highty-Tighty Alumnus. That honor was bestowed with a resounding unanimous vote. His name will be added to the perpetual plaque immediately.

Bobbie Cornelison has provided information regarding the visitation and funeral arrangements.

All Highty-Tighty alumni are asked to wear their Highty-Tighty sweaters with a white shirt and tie for men and a white blouse for females. Please wear khaki pants and dark shoes as well. What we are being asked to do is to wear the HTAB uniform, only we will not wear the hats.

Visitation will be at Oakey’s South Funeral Home in Roanoke from 5:00pm to 8:00pm on Wednesday
evening, October 28.

The funeral will be at Windsor Hills United Methodist Church on Thursday morning, October 29, at 11:00am. The address is 3591 Windsor
Road, Roanoke. Internment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VTCCA Charles O. Cornelison ’67 Honorary Highty Tighty Endowed Scholarship Fund at Virginia Tech Foundation, Inc., c/o Gift Accounting, 902 Prices Fork Road (0336), Blacksburg, Virginia 24061 or by calling Virginia Tech Gift Accounting at 800-533-1144.

Please pass this information on to any of your classmates and other Highty-Tighty alumni who may not have heard the news and keep the family in your thoughts and prayers at this sad time.
